All about Gutters, Part 1: Complete Gutter Systems

Every home needs top performing gutters. It’s not just a matter of directing rainwater away from your home. It’s protecting the structure from potential water damage. As the leading gutter contractor in DeWitt, NY, and the surrounding areas, Barry Best Seamless Gutters discusses the importance of investing in a complete gutter system.

The Importance of Good Gutters

Every house has gutters, but good systems are not as common. Reliable gutters should be able to prevent rainwater getting into places where it shouldn’t be: under the eaves, onto landscaping, into basements, and foundation. The latter is especially important. If the soil around your foundation erodes, it can compromise your home’s structural integrity.

Given the record amounts of snow that we get in the area, gutters in Syracuse, NY, and the surrounding areas, need to be able to handle more than just moderate rainwater. Which is why getting a well-designed, complete gutter system is an important investment.

Complete Gutter Systems

A complete gutter system should have the following components:

1. Gutters These systems can withstand torrential rains and snow. If you choose traditional gutters, make sure the joints are well-built and have better-quality sealants. However, if you prefer something more robust, we recommend investing in seamless gutters. These gutters introduce a clean look to your roof’s edges and virtually eliminate having to re-seal the joints and seams.

2. Gutter hangers Gutter hangers are important because they keep the system in place. They also carry the weight of the rainwater through a load-bearing mechanism. Contractors attach traditional hangers using nails that pierce the fascia, which could allow moisture to be absorbed by the wood. At Barry Best Seamless Gutters, we attach hangers on our seamless gutters in Manlius, NY, and the local area, without nails, so they will not compromising their load-bearing strength.

3. Gutter covers It pays to invest in gutter covers. They keep leaves and small animals from clogging your gutters, allowing water to flow freely into the gutters. Having gutter covers also extends your gutters’ service life. With gutter covers, you’ll only need maintenance every two to three years instead of twice a year.

In our next installment, we will discuss the qualities you should look for in gutter contractors. In the meantime, if you have gutter-related concerns, call Barry Best Seamless Gutters today. You can also fill out our contact form for a free estimate.
